Technology is allowing students at McGraw to actively explore what it means to be a global citizen. This year, all 1st-4th grade classes and MattBrinkman’s 5th grade classroom at McGraw are part of a collaborative learning community with same-grade classes at BINUS International School in Jakarta, Indonesia.
McGraw was excited to host the Denver Museum of Nature and Science this past week. As part of the presentation Time Scene Investigation: Snowmass Village, students came face to face with mammoths, mastodons, and real scientists! Students used scientific inquiry to learn about the Ice Age, how Colorado has changed through time, and what scientists are learning about the Snowmass Village area and the Ice Age creatures that used to live there. Over 4,500 fossils have been unearthed at the site and 20 vertebrate animals have been identified.
Students at McGraw are "in-tune" with music!
Please visit the Music page (under Who We Are - Classrooms - Specials) on the McGraw website: http://mcg.psdschools.org/who-we-are/classrooms/specials/music to learn how students at McGraw are learning about and through music. On this page you can also find out about special upcoming events where students will enhance and share their musical knowledge and skills.
Tuesday, September 27th is our first SAC (school accountability committee) meeting. It will be from 3:45-5:00 at McGraw. We will look at our data frameworks, talk about our collaboration day activities and share our staff focus for the school year. Our SAC team members for the 2010-2011 school year are:
Amy Smith, principal
Kelly Hireneisen, teacher
Trena Friehauf, parent rep
Kara Rudnick, parent and PTSO rep
Randy Petrilli, neighborhood parent rep
Our first Coffee Talk for parents of kindergarten and 1st graders was a great success. We talked about how the year has started for our primary students. Good questions were asked about lunch, cold weather routines and class lists. We talked about enrichment opportunities and routines for kids after school. It was helpful to hear ideas and parent perspective as well as listening to parents interact and share ideas.
McGraw's student Chess Club, which meets every Friday from 8:00 - 8:45 in the media center, continues to grow in popularity. Every Friday before the school the media center is buzzing with the activity of over 40 students in grades K-5 who are learning the basics or polishing their chess-playing strategies. Several parent coaches/mentors are on hand to provide support.
On Friday, September 8, over 170 McGraw students and their families gathered in the park next to the school for dinner and an outdoor movie. The weather cooperated and a fine time was had by all. Thanks to the McGraw PTO for their hard work to sponsor and organize this annual event!
We are looking for two parents to fill two vacancies on our School Accountability Committee. If you are interested in serving on this committee please stop by the office and fill out a nomination form. At least one of the parents need to live in our neighborhood boundary area. This is a two-year term. If you have any questions, please stop by the front office or check out our charter posted on the website for more information.
