Three teams from McGraw competed at the state Odyssey of the Mind tournament on Saturday, April 6 in Castle Rock. Each team gave a fantastic performance and demonstrated a lot of growth since the regional tournament in March.
Our OM team coaches and parents are most proud of how our students's behavior at the tournament represented McGraw and what it means to be an IB learner. This is fitting be cause the tournament took place at Mesa Middle School, which is an IB school.
The two highest scoring teams in each problem for each division are invited to participate in the Odyssey of the Mind world tournament at Michigan State University in May. McGraw's teams competed in Division 1, for students in Grades 3-5. Here are the results:
Our Problem 2 Hide in Plain Sight" technical problem team finished in 4th place against some very stiff competition with a very entertaining and creative skit about catching the "Fortnightus Virus". By the end of the skit, they had everyone in the audience clapping along to the "Fortnightus Dance". Team members are Callen Solley, Althea Stuard, Levi Kuti, James Koenig, Heidi Zwicke, Laila Yockey and Casron Wangnild. Their coach is Matt Kuti.
Our Problem 4 "Structure Toss" balsa tower team took 1st place and has advanced to the OM world tournament with a very clever "pirate carnival" skit and a balsa structure that held over 500 pounds of weight. This team scored the highest amount of points possible in the competition - 350 - by winning the long-term, style and spontaneous portions of the event for their division. Team members are Ben Koenig, Carey Groendyke, Alyssa Johnston, Sinti Yockey, Mackenzie Lea, Ripley Savage and Averi Hoback. Their coach is Kelley Savage.
Our Problem 5 "Opposites Distract" team finished in a tie for 2nd place and also advanced to the OM world tournament. This team, which did not find out they were going to the state tournament until two weeks ago, overcame a lot of adversity and outstanding teams from other schools to earn a spot at Worlds. They chose to meet ever day over lunch the week before the tournament to rebuild props, create new costumes, and enhance their skit about two competing species of birds who are being influenced by the actions of a "sneaky character". Team members are Alana Trumbo, Mariah Gonzalez, Maddie Paige, Ellie Schkade, Dorothy Berger and Moira Jamtgaard. Their coaches are Stephanie Paige and Tasha Brewer.
Thank you again to all of our coaches, parents and staff for supporting our Odyssey of the Mind teams. The teamwork, problem-solving skills and creativity students on the teams develop as a result is a great reflection of the IB Primary Years Program as a whole.
